Hosts Bangladesh eased to a 7-wicket victory in the opening ODI at Khulna against West Indies. This was after the hosts went with a team packed with as many as four debutants and their biggest player Shakib Al Hasan missing out with an injury.
West Indies batting first after winning the toss were bowled out for 199 in 46.5 overs thanks to a sustained bowling performance especially by the spinners. Debutant off-spinner Sohag Gazi who was impressive in the Test Series came up with superb figures of 9.5-2-29-4. Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak took 3 for 39. For the West Indies, Chris Gayle (35 from 40 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes) and Darren Bravo (35 from 41 balls with 4 fours and a six) got starts to their innings but couldn’t make it big. The visitors at one point of their innings were in shambles at 133 for 7 but got some respectability thanks to contributions from Sunil Narine (36 from 45 balls) and Ravi Rampaul (25 from 35 balls).
Bangladesh in their run chase were given a solid start of 88 in 15.1 overs. Tamim Iqbal scored a stroke-filled 58 (from 51 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes). His partner debutant Anamul Haque scored 41 (from 62 balls with 7 fours). Naeem Islam promoted at no.3 finished the match with an unbeaten 50 (from 79 balls with 6 fours).
