- The Captain:
MS Dhoni has been one of the best captains in the history of the Indian cricket and he will go on to be called the one who not only won the country a World T20 title but also the World Cup. In this World Cup, he did not flinch, and while he went on to take some strange decisions in the tournament, in the end, what counted was that the decisions worked in his favour. Dhoni’s cool demeanour on the field was matched by his ability to read the situation well and in the end that was the reason for the team’s win.
- The Coach:
The coach Gary Kirsten has not spoken much right through the time he was appointed as the coach of the side. He has remained in the shadows of the performing stars of the team and there hasn’t been any doubt that he has done a good job of it – by not trying to stamp his authority on the side. Unlike his foreign predecessor, Greg Chappell, who made headlines all the time and for more wrong reasons than right, Kirsten did his job and moved on.
- Zaheer Khan:
21 wickets in the tournament were the joint-highest wickets with Shahid Afridi. What was more important was that he took the wickets when his captain wanted them the most – new ball, old ball and in the slog overs. Clearly, the Indians were one of the weaker bowling sides in the competition and would have required a lot out of Zaheer Khan to get going, which is where he came to the fore.
- Yuvraj Singh:
Six months ago, he was to be chucked out of the side for good. However, he turned things around by winning the man of the tournament award. Things had looked bad for Yuvraj with his injuries and fitness issues and life on the highway had not looked too good for him. But once he got going, got his confidence back, it was back to normal and he went on to bat and bowl with aplomb to get going with the award.
- Sachin Tendulkar:
His has been a dream to win the tournament for long and he has seen the most heartbreaks. He was the one who kept exhorting the players to deliver the goods and his presence in the dressing room and on the field went on to assist the side in winning the tournament in a big way.
