After a well-contested day two, India raced ahead on day three of the Test against England at Mohali, starring with both bat and bat. Here are the significant numbers from the day’s play on Monday.

The Indian spinners played the lead role with the ball, as well as with the willow earlier in the day. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav all hit fifties. This was the first instance in Test cricket for India when three players batting at number seven or lower had crossed the fifty-run mark in the same innings. While this is a first for India, overall such an occurrence has taken place 14 times in Test cricket.

Jadeja registered his highest Test score of 90 at Mohali. His previous highest was a mediocre 68 against England at Lord’s in 2014.

Jayant Yadav has made a rather impressive start with the bat to his Test career. He made 35 and 27 not out at Vizag and 55 in the first innings here.

India’s lower order batted exceedingly well, which can be gauged from the fact that they doubled their total after losing their sixth wicket. They were 204 when they lost their sixth wicket, yet ended up making an impressive 417. This is the fourth instance of them have achieved such a feat. The most recent one before this was at Hamilton against New Zealand in 1998-99. They were 204 for 6 there as well, and ended up making 416 runs.

The Indian batsmen from No. 7 to No. 11 added an impressive tally of 230 runs in the first innings at Mohali – Ashwin 72, Jadeja 90, Jayant 55, Umesh Yadav 12 and Mohammed Shami 1. This the third best aggregate for Nos 7 to 11 from India in a Test match. Their best is the 259 they posted against England at Oval in 2007, followed by the 234 they made against New Zealand at Wellington in 2013-14.

Ben Stokes’ five-for in the first innings at Mohali was the first by an English paceman in India since Matthew Hoggard took 6 for 57 during the Nagpur Test in 2005-06. Incredibly, the previous instance of a pace bowler from England taking a five-for in India dates back to the 1980s. Neil Foster claimed 6 for 104 and 5 for 59 at Chennai in January 1985 to help England pull off a stunning Test victory.

When Jonny Bairstow caught Umesh Yadav off Stokes, it was his dismissal number 68 as a wicket-keeper in 2016. This is the most by a wicket-keeper in a year. Keeping legends, Ian Healy (1993) and Mark Boucher (1998) had effected 67 dismissals each in the year mentioned in brackets.

Yet again, England skipper Alastair Cook fell to the guile of Ashwin. The England captain has been sent back by the Indian offie seven times in Test matches, three of those instances have been in the ongoing series. Cook was clean bowled by Ashwin for 12 on Monday.
