Veteran fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been omitted by Ranji Champions Mumbai from their Irani Cup match on fitness grounds. Zaheer Khan, who had sustained a calf muscle injury during the Ranji season has been recommended three weeks rest. The left-armer’s absence could mean a lot as he could struggle to make it to the India Squad for the upcoming Test Series against Australia which begins on the 14th of next month. Zaheer is as such under enormous pressure after putting in an ineffective show against England before losing his place for the fourth Test at Nagpur.

Meanwhile, Mumbai will be strengthened with the return of Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma who missed the Ranji final because of their international commitment. The Irani Cup match to be played from February 6 to 10 will be a good practice for legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar ahead of the Test Series against Australia.

Mumbai Squad: Ajit Agarkar (Captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Kaustubh Pawar, Abhishek Nayar, Hiken Shah, Aditya Tare (Wicket Keeper), Ankeet Chavan, Javed Khan, Shardul Thakur, Vishal Dabholkar
