India dominated day two of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday. Here are some interesting stats from the day’s play.

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli added 227 for the third wicket. This alone was 44 more than the entire Sri Lankan team managed. This is also now the highest third wicket stand for India in Test matches against Sri Lanka.

While Dhawan and Kohli combined to score 237 runs for the team, the entire Indian team was dismissed for 375. This means the other batsmen made a combined total of only 138 runs. Even among them, wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha made 60.

Saha scored his maiden Test fifty in his sixth Test. Before this, he had registered a highest score of 36 in his debut game against South Africa at Nagpur back in 2010.

Dhawan has now scored back to back hundreds in Tests. He scored 173 at Fatullah against Bangladesh and 134 against Lanka in the first innings of the ongoing Test.

While Dhawan’s consistency remains worrisome, his conversion rate from 50s to 100s is highly impressive. He has crossed fifty six times, and has gone converted them into three-figures on four occasions. Two of these scores have been in excess of 170.

Indian skipper Kohli registered his 11th Test hundred. While his five-day record is extremely impressive, there a blip in his scoring pattern. Out of the 11 times that he has crossed 100, he has gone back the 120 mark only three times, which means this was the eighth time he was out under the score of 120.

The hundred at Galle was Kohli’s first international century since his ton in the opening game of the 2015 World Cup against Pakistan.

Kohli has now scored four hundreds in his first four matches as Test captain. Alastair Cook and Sunil Gavaskar are the other players to have done the same.

While India gained a significant lead over Sri Lanka in the Test, their batting was a mixed bag as five of their batsmen were dismissed in single figure scores. Ajinkya Rahane was the only one who got a duck though.

India’s first innings lead over Sri Lanka was 192, which was 9 more than the entire Lankan team managed in their first innings of the Test.

There was an interesting pattern to the dismissals in India’s innings. Four of their batsmen were clean bowled while four others were trapped lbw.

Tharindu Kaushal picked up five wickets for the second time in his Test career. He finished with 5 for 134. He had claimed 5 for 42 against Pakistan at Colombo earlier this year.

Sri Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva were both dismissed for ducks in the second innings. This was actually the first instance in Test matches that both openers were dismissed without scoring by spinners.
