New Zealand crashed to an innings and 27-run defeat in the opening Test against South Africa at Cape Town. The match was finished well before the Tea Break on the third day. The New Zealand defeat was inevitable after they were bundled out for just 45 on the first day of the Test match.

New Zealand crashed to an innings and 27-run defeat in the opening Test against South Africa at Cape Town. The match was finished well before the Tea Break on the third day. The New Zealand defeat was inevitable after they were bundled out for just 45 on the first day of the Test match.

Dean BrownlieResuming the third day’s play at 169 for 4, the Kiwis were bowled out midway in the afternoon session for 275 in 102.1 overs. Overnight batsman Dean Brownlie, playing in his 8th Test match, scored a maiden century at this level of the game. The 28-year-old Brownlie finished with an entertaining knock of 109 (from 186 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes). BJ Watling, his overnight partner, contributed a stubborn 42 from 151 balls.

For the Proteas, Steyn picked up three wickets while Philander and Kallis got a couple of wickets each. Philander with a total of eight wickets in the match got the Man of the Match award.
