Pat Cummins sealed a dream Test debut when he hit the winning runs to take Australia to a two-wicket win in the second and final Test against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium on Monday.

Australia chased down a target of 310 to share the series. Cummins, who took six for 79 in South Africa's second innings, was named man of the match.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin (55) and left-handed fast bowler Mitchell Johnson (40 not out) were mainly responsible for their team reaching the target, putting on 72 for the seventh wicket after all Australia's specialist batsmen had been dismissed with 95 still needed.

South African opening bowler Vernon Philander claimed his second five- wicket haul in his second Test to keep South Africa in with a chance of winning but did not get enough support from his more experienced teammates. Philander took five for 70.

Philander bowled Australian Michael Clarke in the fourth over of the day after only three runs had been added to the overnight 142 for three.

Ricky Ponting hit an unbeaten 54 to steer Australia to 142-3 at stumps on Day Four of the second and final Test against South Africa on Sunday, leaving a captivating series in the balance ahead of the final day at Wanderers.

Ponting collected his first score of the series in a priceless 122-run partnership with UsmanKhawaja (65) to give Australia real hope of chasing down the 310 they require to win the Test and save a series where they trail 1-0.

With seven wickets in hand and two days to go, South Africa will target a lead of 300-plus, forcing Australia to make a record run chase at the Wanderers to win the match and save the series.

The highest successful fourth-innings run chase at the Johannesburg stadium is 294 by Australia six years ago.

Australia were bowled out for 296 under an onslaught from South Africa speedster Dale Steyn to throw away a 174-run opening partnership and a dominant position in the decisive second Test at Wanderers on Friday.

Australia added just 122 more runs after the opening stand between Shane Watson (88) and Phillip Hughes (88) was broken to hold a first-innings lead of 30 when it looked set for a much bigger advantage.

Steyn took 4-64 and Pakistan-born leg-spinner ImranTahir 3-55 for his first Test wickets to drag Australia back after Watson and Hughes had hammered South Africa's attack to all parts in Johannesburg.

Only Mitchell Johnson showed prolonged resistance after Watson and Hughes exited, hitting six fours in his unbeaten 38 to ensure Australia pushed ahead.

Australia ripped out South Africa's last six batsmen for 25 runs to bowl the hosts out for 266 by stumps on the first day of the second Test at Wanderers on Thursday, taking early control of a match the tourists have to win to level the series.

The Aussies took 4-4 in a three-over spell in the final session, sending the Proteas on their way to a dramatic collapse reminiscent of Australia's infamous second innings slump in the first Test at Cape Town.
